Quick Bites: Alien:Romulus

was determined to go into Alien: Romulus as blind as possible and I’m glad I did. After the more recent Alien-like sequels, I didn’t go in with much hope. Seeing Fede Alvarez directing it, I got my hopes up a little. After his take on Evil Dead I thought I was in for a good ride.

PLOT:

While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

Positives:

  • The cinematography was really well done. I felt like I was living in that crappy world our characters were living in.

  • Yes there was fan service. And I was here for it!

  • The acting was pretty good. Cailee Spaeny (Rain) and David Jonsson (Andy) stood out the most.

  •  I liked the plot. I thought it fit really well in the Alien franchise.

  • Fede Alvarez directs Alien: Romulus, do I need to say more!

Negatives:

  • It’s hard to give some information without giving away spoilers but I’ll try. One character was very AI ish and I thought that it would have and could have been better.

  • I also would have liked to see more of the Xenomorphs. You did see a lot but for me, I can never get enough of seeing that sleek, H.R. Giger monster.

  • There were a couple of characters I knew were doomed as soon as they were introduced. But that didn’t bother me too much.

  • Is the movie perfect? No but any gripes were pretty minor.

If you are a fan of the original Alien I definitely recommend watching this. And I would definitely recommend watching Alien: Romulus in the theater!

On a side note: Our theater has what are called D-Box seats so I decided to check it out. The seats shake and move with the movie so it was a very cool experience. I never heard of D-Box before but, depending on the movie, would recommend checking it out for at least one time.

Quick Bite rating: 4.3/5
