Quick Bites: The Invitation

Admittedly, I went into The Invitation with low expectations. I mean, I liked the trailers, but what I was hearing from the horror community wasn’t good. So I went in thinking it was going to be horrible. I’m glad I was wrong.

Plot:

Evie is approached by an unknown cousin who invites her to a lavish wedding in the English countryside. Soon, she realizes a Gothic conspiracy is afoot and must fight for survival as she uncovers twisted secrets in her family’s history.

Positives:

  • The acting was pretty good. I think Nathalie Emmanuel did a great job as our lead. And I think Thomas Doherty was great opposite her.

  • I liked the Gothic setting. The huge estate was gorgeous.

  • I actually liked the plot. There were issues but I liked it.

  • Did I mention Thomas Doherty was in it? That man is gorgeous and that accent. Sigh.

Negatives:

  • Not enough horror in it. It did feel like more of a romance movie than horror.

  • I wish they would have gone more in depth with the plot. Especially with the three families. (Sorry, trying not to spoil anything.)

  • I wish The Invitation was R rated. I would have liked the deaths to be more bloodier and the sex scene more, well, sexier.

Like I said before, I did see some people's reviews of the movie and so I didn’t expect much. I disagree. I did like it as a gothic type movie. A little more romance than I like but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. If it was R rated, I think it could have been a lot better. The Invitation isn’t for everybody but it passes the time. Oh, and did I mention Thomas Doherty? LOL
