Cult of Chucky

I wasn’t sure how this movie was going to play out but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Almost the whole movie is contained in a mental institution. Chucky dealing with a bunch of crazy people, crazier than himself, was a fun movie.

PLOT

Nica is now in a mental hospital, where Chucky finds her and goes on a killing spree with some friends.

MY THOUGHTS

Andy sent me. We're gonna have some fun–Kyle

There are 8 kills. For the most part the kills are pretty cool and bloody. Only a couple of scenes were kind of bad because of bad CGI and they were the decapitation and some of the blood. Creepy Dr. Folley’s skull caved in was pretty good. Speaking of a skull caved in, the one buzzed Chucky had a nice head stomping as well.

Another decent cast that can act. One such aMichael Therriault as Dr. Foley, a doctor who seems good in the beginning, but you find out he’s sleazy. Elisabeth Rosen as Madeleine, as a patient who killed her son and transfers her guilt to one of the chucky dolls. I think she did great as someone who is dealing with her guilt.

I obviously have to mention the return of Alex Vincent as Andy, Christine Elyse as Kyle, and Jennifer Tilley as Tiffany. Very nice seeing some of the original characters from the first two movies. Andy torturing his own copy of Chucky is a great way to work through his PTSD. Coming up with a plan to help Nica when he finds out Chucky is back in the asylum. I hope they continue (at some point) with Andy in future movies.

I would have liked to see more of Christine Elyse. You only get to see Kyle in the post credit scene in the Unrated version. Kyle shows up to Andy’s cabin to have some fun with Chucky. She is actually wearing the same hat she wore in Child’s Play 2. I do hope to get more Child’s Play movies with adult Andy and Kyle.

We get Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany, playing Jennifer Tilly. Does that make sense? Tiffany possessed Jennifer Tilly in Seed of Chucky. It’s great no matter who she plays. What little we get of Jennifer Tilly/Tiffany is great. I like how she is just cool with what body Chucky is now in. And she still has a little of that wanting to be a mom. So that can cause tension with Chucky later on.

I wanted to take a quick break to let you know I found these great deals on Amazon for Child’s Play merchandise. I’ve applied to Amazon’s affiliate program and if I can get three purchases I will be accepted into the program. This will be of tremendous help with starting my small business.

A true classic never goes out of style.--Tiffany

So poor Nica is found technically insane so she is institutionalized. She finally ends up at a medium security institute and that’s when things go crazy. She’s finally accepting that she is the one that killed her family when Chucky dolls start showing up there and killings start happening again. This time Chucky is able to possess multiple dolls. Forming his own little cult. No one believes her at first, and after a couple of murders Andy shows up to try to save NIca and get his own revenge.

Overall a pretty good movie. With just the right tinge of humor yet still remains the scary movie that we like. I know the next movie is the remake, and a TV show has aired, but I’m still hoping that they continue this story with Chucky/Nica, Tiffany/Jennifer, Andy, and Kyle.

DID YOU KNOW…

  • Chucky compares one of the other Chucky dolls to Hannibal Lecter, adding "Can't believe they canceled that show." Writer/director Don Mancini wrote two episodes of Hannibal (2013) during its third (and unexpectedly final) season.

  • Don Mancini wrote and directed the film. He wrote the initial script for Child's Play (1988), co-wrote or wrote every Chucky film, and directed the previous two films.

  • Two weeks before the film was officially released, the film was leaked in its entirety to Twitter and YouTube. In response to the leak, Don Mancini tweeted: "To the geniuses who leaked Cult of Chucky and tweeted about it, congrats, not only are you terrible people, now Universal lawyers know who you are." Alex Vincent stated that he didn't understand the logic, since the movie would be available to watch on Netflix.

  • Multiple cast members from Curse of Chucky (2013) reappear in different roles. Adam Hurtig, who plays Michael, played Officer Stanton. Ali Tataryn, who plays Nurse Ashley, was a US EX employee who delivers Chucky to Andy in the post-credits tag. Finally, Darren Wall, who plays a security guard at the asylum, previously appeared as a highway cop.

  • After talking to one of the patients, Chucky calls the asylum a "cuckoo's nest". Brad Dourif, the voice of Chucky, made his film debut as Billy Bibbit in the film adaption of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975).

  • In the commentary, Don Mancini reveals that giving all three Chuckys a subtle difference was a studio executive decision to help differentiate them in the film. During production, the Chuckys were nicknamed "Buzzcut," "Ragamuffin," "Edwardian," and "Evil Dead."

  • Nica's attempted suicide is more heartbreaking in hindsight as John Lafia, who co-wrote the first film in the franchise and directed the second film, had committed suicide in 2020.

  • Second film in which Chucky wins, as he and Tiffany both literally get away with murder at the end of the film.

  • When Andy opens the safe containing Chucky's head his Kent uniform from Child's Play 3 can be seen on the door.
