Quick Bites: When Evil Lurks
When Evil Lurks was first released I was hesitant to watch it. Possession movies are not my favorite subgenre. Even though I heard praise for it I still held out on watching it. It took Joe Bob showing it on Nightmareathon (Joe Bob’s Last Drive In Season 6) before I actually watched it. I have regrets waiting so long.
Positives:
I enjoyed the plot of When Evil Lurks. It’s not your typical possession movie.
The kills are pretty decent for a low budget movie.
The director, Demián Rugna, also made 2017’s Terrified. Another great movie to watch if you haven’t.
Just an FYI: When Evil Lurks was nominated for four awards at the Dead Meat Horror Awards: Best Practical Effects, Best Kill, Best Director, and Best Original Film. It won all four.
Negatives:
Now, this isn’t a negative for me but, it’s a foreign film with subtitles. A lot of people will write off this movie just for that.
The ending is pretty bleak. I mean, make sure to watch something a little more light hearted afterwards.
This is a bit of a spoiler but it’s a trigger warning. There are some animal deaths. But not really shown but you know what happens.
I’ll try not to spoil the movie but you know the saying the way to hell is paved with good intentions? Well, our two leads just make one bad decision after another. I kind of feel bad for them. Overall When Evil Lurks is a really good, dark and bleak movie that I highly recommend. If you’re looking for a different take on possession, then When Evil Lurks is a great choice. And this being spooky season, this is the perfect time to watch it. So go now and watch it.
